Soapstone (also known as steatite or soaprock) is a talc-schist, a type of metamorphic rock composed largely of the magnesium-rich mineral talc. This bird is Kenyan soapstone, known as ‘kisii,’ found in Kenya's fertile western Tabaka hills, one of the most densely populated areas of the country. Here, income from kisii soapstone carving helps ensure that families have shelter over their heads and hope for the future. This product is fair traded.
